Can you believe that it is almost 2019? Today is New Year’s Eve, and if you are anything like me you are scratching your head and asking yourself, “What just happened?” I’m not going to lie! This has been one of the most difficult years that I have had in a very long time, but it is time to let all of that go and think about a few chosen words to focus on in 2019.
Life is hard sometimes, and this year has been extremely difficult. We are all still in shock and trying to pick up the pieces after Stormi’s daddy was killed in the line of duty in September. Riley’s adoption is still not finalized, although we recently had our first court date and things are finally beginning to fall into place. Jason’s work schedule has changed drastically, and we are all trying to find our new normal. And homeschool this year has just been downright HARD. I could list a ton of reasons from this year as to why things have been less than great, but I’ll stop here because there is something more important to focus on in the midst of all of this difficulty. LESSONS LEARNED! The one thing that I am grateful for after all the loss, the tragedy, and the uncertainty that we have experienced this year is growth. It is through our trials that God allows us to grow.
So with the new year just around the corner I have chosen a few words to focus on in 2019. Each year I choose at least one or more words to focus on in order to help me grow and improve where needed. This year I have chosen three words:
Intentional: One thing I noticed about 2018 was that it was a year of mundane routine. With all of the craziness that popped up in our lives, I clung to routines such as when and how we homeschool, cooking supper, cleaning the house, etc. Routines are great. Don’t get me wrong. But I did not allow myself to be intentional about carving out special moments with my husband, my children, or my friends. I want my tribe to FEEL my love, not just hear my words. So this year I plan to be intentional about making them feel loved and appreciated.
Dance: My second word for 2019 is dance! I know this sounds crazy because it has nothing to do with a better future. But for me it does. I have a tendency to withdraw from everyone when things are less than pleasant. But this year I want to change the unpleasant and make it better. How do we do that? WE DANCE! Dance parties in the living room just for fun. Dancing while cleaning the house. Dancing while cooking supper. Have you ever sang into a spatula like it was a microphone? I promise it makes all the ugly go away if for no other reason than just laughing at your own silliness.
Ruth: My third word comes from the story of Ruth in the Bible. I want Ruth to be the example that I live by each and every day. Ruth is a woman who experienced great loss and pain, yet she remained faithful to God, and she found her strength through Him. She was an early riser, a hard worker, and a faithful servant. She didn’t turn back to what was familiar. She stepped out of her comfort zone and walked right into the unknown. She was courageous and brave, and she found her divine destiny through a lot of hard work, sweat, and prayer.
What about you? Do you choose a word to focus on each new year? If so I would love to hear what they are and why! Leave me a comment here on the blog.
